Movie Review - Black Adam

Black Adam totally killed it!  He can rip bad reviews apart because Dwayne Johnson ROCKed hard!  He couldn't quite get the 'nice guy' twang out of his words but he still exuded the menace and almost otherworldly presence.  I love the new origin, veering away from the horrible crime his comic version did (he actually killed the boy to get the powers).  This Black Adam is to be embraced.

While their appearance was odd at first, the Justice Society presents a solid case for a movie of their own.  There should be a rogue JSA cut of the Black Adam film and it would work.  Hawkman and Dr Fate owned their scenes, bringing their own personality and pathos into the flick.  Atom Smasher, with his red and blue and general goofiness could be mistaken for a certain webhead.  Cyclone is a joy, which surprised me because I was wary of the race change.

I can't wait to see more of this director!  The movie had spectacular effects during the action but it packed such an emotional punch when it had to.  Various humorous bits sprinkled in were quite fun.  

Black Adam totally breaks into my current top 3 films of 2022.  Congratulations to all involved.  Here's to Black Adam's well deserved success!

Movie Review - Godzilla x Kong - The New Empire

Godzilla might have top billing but, same as last time, he feels like a guest star in a King Kong movie. King Kong gets the bulk of storytelling focus as he is made relatable with feelings of loneliness, paternal leanings and even a toothache. Godzilla remains a practical force of nature and except for that instance of cat napping, he is still treated as an enigma. It's been a few years so details about the scientist, her adopted daughter and the humor relief are largely forgotten. But we're just around for the slugfest. As fun as the wrestling moves are, the antagonist seems like a letdown after Ghidorah and Mecha Godzilla. His whip work was amazing and he does have an aura of charismatic dislike but he doesn't feel like a threat worthy of Godzilla absorbing tons of radiation to fight. Same with Kong getting a mecha fist. Still, The New Empire is an enjoyable romp. They could just drop the pretenses and just make a straight Kong movie, really.
