Press Event - A Tooth in My Popsicle by David Haldane

Writer David Haldane is an absolute sweetheart, very genteel and approachable. He also doesn't pull any punches when it comes to his observations of the Philippine lifestyle in his new compilation of essays, A Tooth in My Popsicle.

Settling in Surigao a few years ago, David chronicles his adventures in 73 short, easy to read segments. With some almost taboo topics ranging from what happens when there are no toilets, to casual crimes against the environment and even eating pets, there is much to marvel, to ponder and to laugh about. There's surprises to be had (I didn't know bayanihan is still being implemented) and more than a few heartfelt moments, such as the birth of his daughter.

The book launch was in Ortigas Heritage Library in Greenhills on March 7, 2023.  David Haldane was with his wife Ivy and daughter Adira.  He read three chapters of his book, The Thing About Poop, Light Up the Sky and his birthday in Seventy.  He answered several questions from the audience before signing books for us.

(The question I asked was if his being a recognized figure in Surigao led to locals asking him to include them in his articles.  Also asked him beforehand about the chronological order of the chapters.  He explained that he switched it up so the story flowed better but didn't want to alter the actual dates.)

Having the Filipino rural lifestyle filtered through the eyes of an expat makes for a great and relaxing read, especially with the stories expertly retold by an award winning journalist from the LA times. Give A Tooth in My Popsicle a try. It's a treat you can sink your teeth into.
